Communications, Video and Design Specialist

The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) is seeking a Communications, Video and Design Specialist to join the Institute's Government Relations and Communications (GRC) team and be responsible for the design and development of communication, video and marketing materials to help tell NDI success stories and program accomplishments. This role involves print, digital, video, and web-based products, including the development of graphic and multimedia content across internal and external communications channels such as the intranet/portal, YouTube, social media and online media. The specialist contributes to the GRC team's overall communications strategy by assisting in the development of communications projects, campaigns, and outreach activities. This role supports staff across the Institute on creative design concepts, and provides recommendations on strategies for communication activities related to building democratic capacity in developing countries. This position does not have direct reports.

Responsibilities:
Content Creation

  • Conceptualizes, designs and produces materials aligned with NDI's branding standards, in collaboration with the Director and other teams, for large scale events and communications outreach; makes recommendations to the Director on branding ideas that create broad support for NDI programs
  • Works with teams routinely on creative projects, campaigns, and informational events (both local and international) to design infographics, programs, brochures, postcards and slides using different multimedia channels (print, web, social media, video)
  • In collaboration with other members of the GRC team, creates and maintains online and social media content, writes web stories for NDI events and blogs for NDI.org, proofreads and copy-edits written submissions from other teams; takes photos at events for later use in various media channels
  • Provides technical and strategic guidance in creative design and communication strategies for deployment
  • Explores and develops new ways to communicate activities, disseminate information and expand targeted audiences; keeps abreast of relevant changes in external creative trends that can be implemented at NDI
  • Assists with analysis data from NDI.org and other social media channels in order to expand external audiences
  • Assists team members in collaboration with other NDI teams/staff to expand the audience and communicate the organization's goals and success stories

Videography

  • Produces large and small scale engaging and original videos for various teams at NDI;
  • Develops video including scripts, pre and post production activities, budget, editing, and digital asset management
  • Determined by project needs, helps coordinate and direct the procurement of services when external vendors are used for video productions
  • Provides training in videography and photo-taking to help NDI teams tell success stories and highlight local partners

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in communications, mass media, public relations, marketing; a combination of experience and education in lieu of degree will be considered
  • Two (2) years of experience with content creation and communications strategies working with different media mechanisms in a client driven environment
  • Experience with conceptualizing, designing and producing design materials
  • Experience with video creation, including pre and post production activities and the operation of production equipment sufficient to create quality video for YouTube and other online channels
  • Experience with editing copy, and accurate spelling, grammar, syntax of English language
  • Uses a meticulous approach with high attention to details in order to create high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines
  • Ability to exercise good judgement in applying design skills to fit needs of various stakeholders.

  • Desktop publishing software — Adobe Systems Adobe FrameMaker; Adobe Systems Adobe InDesign; Illustrator, Publisher
  • Graphics or photo imaging software — Adobe Systems Adobe Flash; Adobe Systems Adobe Photoshop; Microsoft Visio, Photoshop, Audition, Dream Weaver
  • Video creation and editing software — Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro
  • Web platform content management software — Drupal
  • Social media planning software — HootSuite
  • Project Management — Trello
  • Microsoft office suite software, Google Apps {sheets, doc, slides, etc}

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a 40 hour per week full-time position. Core hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m however there may be flexibility on start and end time depending on department needs. This position may have the ability to remotely work depending on the demands. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel

There is no international travel associated with this role. There may be occasional local travel but rare.
