Purpose and Objectives: 

InterAction is seeking translations of two pieces of work under current development by the Humanitarian Policy and Practice Team. These products are currently in English, with need to translate them into at least 4 core languages (French, Spanish, Arabic and Portuguese) as well as additional languages. Each of the programs are outlined in further detail below.  The scope of each body of work varies, but the successful applicant will deliver on the following essential functions in close collaboration with the InterAction program leads for each project:   

  • Translate technical materials from English to at least 6 languages (Spanish, French, Arabic, Portuguese and others.)  
  • Plain language support – revision of materials and guidance to ensure materials are communicated clearly in English prior to translation 
  • Desktop publishing service to deliver files in the target languages fit for publication 
  1. Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) Training Materials: 

Tentative Timeline: October 2021 – September 2022 

Length: 3 modules that include facilitator guides, Handouts, and Power Point Presentations 

Pages: 280 pages of facilitator guide, 174 pages PPT 

Module 1: 125 page facilitator guide, 83 slide PPT 

Module 2: 81 page facilitator guide, 60 slide PPT 

Module 3: 74 page facilitator guide, 31 slide PPT 

Words: 27,000 

Languages: Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, others TBC 

 Over the course of one year the PSEA materials will need to be translated into at least 5 more. The 5 languages will be determined in consultation with InterAction staff and members. 

 The training materials have already been developed and are currently being translated into French. The target audience for the PSEA training package ranges from entry level to senior management of operational organizations implementing humanitarian programs. A video made with the same process and which is an active component of the training package can be found here, already translated into over 20 different languages.  

  1. Risk Management 101 Video  

Tentative Timeline: July – September 2021 

Length: Script for a 6-9 minute video

 The target audience for the Risk Management 101 video includes frontline field staff. The content is intended to be an introduction and primer on key risk management concepts and how they apply to humanitarian operations and contexts. The successful applicant will work alongside InterAction and a creative video production company, also overseen by InterAction, in the production of a short film on risk management. The work includes:  

  • Review video script and content concepts (such as storyboards and animations) to ensure content is aligned with plain language communication techniques.  
  • In consultation with InterAction, review and adjust content based on feedback from key stakeholders including NGO members.  
  • Provide plan language editing and translation services of various texts, and where possible and necessary, language dubbing. 
  • Provide translations into at least 3 languages (French, Arabic and Spanish). Where time and budget permits, offer additional translations in other priority languages.
  • Create a simple guidance for translation and dubbing to make a tool available for translation by others into more niche languages.  

Qualifications:  

  • Demonstrable experience translating complex materials from English to a range of languages, experience with humanitarian concepts and terminology highly preferred. 
  • Experience managing large packages of translation
  • Ability to grasp new, complex ideas  
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time and competing demands effectively while working under pressure with tight deadlines 
  • Able to balance the need to work independently while collaborating closely with the InterAction team and other relevant actors 
  • Familiarity and experience communicating issues of sexual exploitation and abuse is considered highly desirable 
  • Fluency in English

  • Explanation of applicant approach in sourcing translations from non-dominant languages such as Hausa, Amharic, and others.  
  • # of days/hours estimated and associated timeline for each body of work.  
  • Detailed budget including:  
  • Itemized costs disaggregated by each project. ONLY BUDGETS DETAILING DISAGGREGATED COSTS WILL BE CONSIDERED.  
  • # of days/hours estimated for each project 
  • Staff time and % level of effort across each project Portfolio with examples of previous translation work 
  • Two references with full contact details, humanitarian specific references encouraged
