Doctors of the World seeks an experienced Development Officer to build the organization’s revenue base, particularly from private foundations, corporations, and HNWI/family foundations to support the programs of other chapters of the MdM network, and the new and growing programs and operations of DotW USA.  The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable record of success in winning and managing grants of all sizes, especially in the six to seven-figure range.  He/she will have proven experience managing the full life cycle of donor engagement, from effective prospect research to preparation of LOIs, concept notes, proposals and budgets, to award and post-award management, including compliance and reporting.  In addition to managing external relationships, he/she will also have the necessary skills to bring together all relevant internal partners involved at each step of the development enterprise, including program experts, finance staff, executive office, board members, and others. He/she should also have fluency in building and interpreting program budgets, writing grant applications, concept notes and reports.

This is an extraordinary opportunity for the rare, tenacious individual who is inspired and motivated by the significant challenge of building a strong, stable, and sustainable foundation of support for a relatively young and small, but growing, organization.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of past, current and prospective donors, particularly private foundation, corporate, and HNWI/family foundation donors.
  • Develop and implement annual and multi-year fundraising plans to manage and expand donor base and prospect pipeline.
  • Conduct research to identify new restricted and unrestricted support from donors whose priorities are in alignment with those of DotW/MdM.
  • Represent the programs and mission of DotW USA and the MdM International Network to US-based donors, in line with the Network’s Resource Sharing Agreement (RSA).
  • Collaborate strategically with program and field staff of both the US and other MdM national chapters to facilitate successful grant applications and post-award grant management.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, staff and board members to identify and secure new funding opportunities.
  • Provide support and leadership to the board Development Committee.
  • Participate in the positioning of DotW/MdM at national and global fora and conferences; manage face to face cultivation meetings between subject matter experts and donors.
  • Participate in the MdM International Network’s regular meetings of fundraisers.
  • Maintain donor history in Salesforce, and keep accurate and up to date electronic records and files.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • 5-7+ years or more of professional experience in a nonprofit organization with demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).
  • Experience working for an international humanitarian aid, human rights, public health, or social service or related organization is highly desired.
  • Experience working in the challenging environment of an international networked or federated organization is strongly preferred.
  • Tangible experience cultivating and expanding existing donor relationships over time.
  • Experience developing and analyzing complex grant and program budgets.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and key stakeholders to build long‐term relationships.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable style; able to positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently, remotely and productively, and as a team player who will engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside of the organization.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours when necessary; ability to travel periodically.
  • Knowledge of donor database management – preferably a detailed knowledge of Salesforce or other CRM software.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Masters preferred.
  • High energy and passion for the vision, mission and values of the organization is essential.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Customer focus; donor-centric vision and approach.
  • A professional and resourceful style; takes initiative, and is able to manage multiple tasks, projects and deadlines simultaneously.

About Doctors of the World USA

Doctors of the World (DotW), a non-profit, 501c3 organization, is the US chapter of the Médecins du Monde (MdM) International Network, a global health and humanitarian organization with a focus on human rights that provides emergency and long-term medical care to vulnerable populations while fighting for equal access to healthcare worldwide. DotW is a small but growing organization with increasing influence in the MdM International Network, and is in the process of launching its own direct service and advocacy programs in the US.  We work at the intersection of social and racial justice, human rights, health equity and policy advocacy.

Doctors of the World values healthcare as a fundamental right and is committed to improving access to quality medical services for populations affected by systemic inequities including poverty, lack of access to healthcare, housing and education, conflict, or natural disasters. DotW provides services under all circumstances, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, age or political beliefs. DotW bears witness to health inequity worldwide. Globally, our network has deep expertise in five main program pillars: sexual and reproductive health and rights; migrants and refugees; mental health; harm reduction; and disaster response.
