Description

Position Title: Director of Global Education and Training

Location: Washington, DC (with extensive travel to our international sites)

Reports To: Executive Director

Application Deadline: June 20, 2020 (position open until filled)

EarthRights International is a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization that combines the power of law and the power of people in defense of human rights and the environment, which we define as “earth rights.” We specialize in fact-finding, legal actions, training of grassroots and community leaders, and advocacy campaigns. EarthRights seeks to defend earth rights by working closely with communities to find real solutions that promote and protect human rights and the environment.

Director of Global Education and Training

EarthRights International is seeking to fill a new position on its senior leadership team, with the responsibility for strategically expanding the scale and impact of its EarthRights School and other education and training initiatives. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Training Director will work with colleagues to:

  • support the ongoing development and improvement of current training programs,
  • achieve further integration with EarthRights’s legal advocacy and campaigning work (in Southeast Asia, Latin America and West Africa), and
  • create new education and training opportunities for earth rights defenders in various local, national and international contexts.

The director will both oversee the EarthRights School and lead a collaborative reflection and planning process related to all current and future programs, including the organizational structures and staffing needed to support a fully integrated and highly impactful use of EarthRights’ education and training resources.

Current EarthRights Programs

The EarthRights School’s residential and field-based program that for over 20 years has developed awareness and skills among young human rights and environmental activists from Myanmar and other nations in the Mekong region.  The seven-month program is now based at EarthRights’ Mitharsuu Center for Leadership and Justice in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The center also hosts shorter-term courses such as the annual, two-week Mekong Legal Advocacy Institute for young lawyers and professionals in the region.  EarthRights’s office in Peru also organizes a similar training program, the Latin America Seminar on Indigenous Legal Defense for members of indigenous communities in Central and South America.

Future Programs

Recently, EarthRights has organized two global exchanges that have brought together leaders of rights-based training centers in the Mekong region (several created by alumni of the EarthRights School program), India, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil and the United States.

These initiatives have resulted in new educational materials and many ideas for engaging EarthRights in the creation of a global network for educating and training earth rights defenders -- residential and online.

Requirements

To help EarthRights realize the immense potential for greater scale and impact of our education and training work, we are seeking a person who:

  • is passionately committed to exposing global injustices by mobilizing local community power and utilizing the law in order to demand accountability.
  • has a deep understanding of human rights, environment and related social justice issues, drawn from both activism and formal education.
  • will bring a proven record of visionary leadership, management and networking, as well as education and training practice (including experiential, participatory and online methodologies).

We envision that the new director will have:

  • 15 or more years of relevant professional experience.
  • A master’s degree or higher (J.D., Ph.D.) in a relevant field of study.
  • Excellent English communication skills and ideally fluency in one or more other languages, especially Spanish or French.
  • The position will be based in Washington, DC but will require extensive travel and time in Chiang Mai and other international sites.

Applicants should submit a cover letter and resume/CV to recruiting@earthrights.org with the subject line “Training Director”.

Position is open until filled. Please note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
