Position Overview: Project C.U.R.E.’s Director of Government Relations is responsible for obtaining funding from governmental and NGO sources to support the delivery of medical relief around the world. This is accomplished through building partnerships, researching opportunities, drafting proposals and securing commitments for revenue. Project C.U.R.E. is headquartered in Denver, Colorado. This position is based in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate funding to implement Project C.U.R.E. programs from the United States Government (USG) agencies/organizations, such as the State Department, USAID, OFDA, DOD, and CDC; and from foreign government sources such as NORAD (Norway), DIFD (Great Britain), SIDA (Sweden), and international agencies, such as UN, WHO, PAHO and others.
  • Establish partnerships and teaming agreements to secure grants, contracts, or sub-contracts with prime contractors or grantees and/or with Government and Non-governmental Organizations (NGO’s) to secure government funding;
  • Assist Project C.U.R.E. Directors in the development and implementation of public-private partnerships between USG and other government sources, and corporations with international interests.
  • Build relationships with domestic and foreign government representatives, including members of U.S. Congress, Ambassadors and U.S. Embassy staff, foreign officials including Presidents and First Ladies, Ambassadors, Ministers of Health, and fellow international development organizations.
  • Represent Project C.U.R.E. at key international development conferences and with resource organizations such as InterAction and others.
  • Facilitate Project C.U.R.E integration of Government funded programs and provide support to other Project C.U.R.E. funded programs/activities.

Qualifications:  The Director of Government Relations must have demonstrated alignment with Project C.U.R.E.’s mission and core values. The Director must be passionate about saving lives, strengthening healthcare systems and addressing healthcare inequalities in the developing world in a sustainable manner. The Director of Government Relations must have experience writing successful grant proposals/budgets and working with U.S. Government and other government agencies and/or NGO’s in health system development and capacity building. The ideal candidate for the position:

  • Is Qualified: Holds a Master’s degree (MA or MPH) or has equivalent expertise, and has at least ten years of experience in fundraising/development, strategic government positions and/or international development generating at least $1 million in revenue from diverse partners, such as government grants, foundations, corporate partners or individuals.
  • Understands the Task: Has a working knowledge of the U.S. government, foreign governments and/or international organization contracting and grant processes; has the ability to write program proposals and is able to develop successful partnerships with contractors, sub-contractors, partner companies and/or NGO’s in securing USG and other sources of funding.
  • Is Self-Motivated: While this position is a part of a larger team, the position requires the successful Director to effectively manage their schedule, work independently and successfully interact with team members who are working in other cities. The Director will travel to the International Headquarters in Denver throughout the year.
  • Is an Ethical Leader: Maintains the highest ethical standards, personal integrity and values to create a transparent, safe and honest organization, and represents Project C.U.R.E. in a positive and professional manner. The Director has an understanding of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and other ethical and regulatory standards.
  • Works Well With Others: Demonstrates a high degree of emotional intelligence and has developed cultural competency through experience working with diverse communities. Can show an ability to work with partners in both the international nonprofit and government sectors and can work as a team member with other colleagues.
  • Is an Effective Communicator: Communicates effectively through writing, interpersonal communication and public speaking. Listens well and understands others. Can accurately relate the Project C.U.R.E. mission and story to potential partner organizations and communicate the outcomes of a successful relationship.
  • Is a Problem-Solver: Identifies, diagnoses and quickly resolves complex problems to improve results; is continuously pursuing innovation and process improvements to increase efficiencies and competitive advantage.
  • Is Goal-Oriented: Is accountable using Key Performance Indicators, including revenue and expense goals and objectives; monitors performance and reports results; is a “self-starter” who is internally motivated and requires minimal direction or supervision.
  • Develops Other People: Recruits, inspires and leads associates, volunteers, mentees and interns to achieve goals within the context of building a performance culture; is accessible to volunteers and associates at all levels, interacting consistently, openly and honestly to assure everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
  • Can Travel: While extensive international travel is not required, most Project C.U.R.E. staff take at least two international trips a year to work with partners in the field. In addition, the Director will travel to Denver to work on site at the International Headquarters approximately once every six weeks. (Project C.U.R.E. pays the costs of travel) In addition, the Director may arrange and accompany visits for Washington D.C.-based partners to the Philadelphia (Mid-Atlantic) Project C.U.R.E. warehouse and other C.U.R.E. Communities.

Reports To: The Director of Government & NGO Relations currently reports to the President/CEO.

Compensation and Benefits: This position offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience, including health insurance, paid vacation, holidays, and 403(B) plan.

Clinics, Helping Babies Breathe Training, and Biomedical Technical Training at approximately 300 hospitals and health clinics in 40 developing nations.

On average, the value of a Project C.U.R.E. Cargo container is worth $450,000 on a wholesale basis. The cost of delivering a container is approximately $20,000 which provides an amazing 20-to-1 return on investment. Project C.U.R.E. operates Distribution Centers in Denver, Phoenix, Houston, Nashville, Chicago and Philadelphia where more than 20,000 volunteers sort more than 26,000 types of nonperishable medical supplies and certify medical equipment for shipment abroad. Project C.U.R.E. also operates 12 Collection Centers from Ithaca to Sarasota to Portland. Project C.U.R.E. receives both new and quality used medical items from hundreds of hospitals throughout the United States and medical manufacturers, such as Stryker, Medline, Medtronic, Kimberly-Clark, Steris and Hill-Rom.

Project C.U.R.E. operates on 1.9% administrative overhead and has earned numerous awards for being the industry leader in international medical donations. Project C.U.R.E. has been named a four-star organization by Guidestar and Charity Navigator and was ranked by Forbes as one of the 20 most cost effective nonprofits in the United States.
