Position Title: EarthRights School Teacher (Curriculum Development)

Location: Chiang Mai, Thailand

Reports To: Head of EarthRights School

EarthRights International (EarthRights) is a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization that combines the power of law and the power of people in defense of human rights and the environment, which we define as “earth rights.” We specialize in fact-finding, legal actions, training of grassroots and community leaders, and advocacy campaigns. EarthRights seeks to defend earth rights by working closely with communities to find real solutions that promote and protect human rights and the environment.

Summary Description

Established in 1999, the EarthRights School is a unique, seven-month residential program that is designed to build power, put legal tools into the hands of front-line activists and NGOs, and help communities protect their rights and the environment. One of the program’s principal, overarching themes is leadership: EarthRights International aims to invest in a small group of outstanding individuals who will return to their homes to lead, inspire, and train others. We are currently seeking a full-time Teacher to develop curriculum for the school. The post is based in Chiang Mai, Thailand with our partner organization and requires travel throughout the region.

Roles and Responsibilities

Teaching & Curriculum Development

  • Design, manage and implement on-going revisions and new developments of curricula for the EarthRights School program.
  • Prepare and teach the EarthRights School courses using an experiential education model. This includes reviewing past lesson plans and designing/redesigning them to meet current needs.
  • Ensure internal EarthRights International staff teachers integrate student-centered learning pedagogy into their lesson plans. Includes coordinating the development of lesson plans and/or developing full courses with EarthRights International staff teachers, depending on their level of experience.
  • Ensure courses taught by internal EarthRights International staff or guest teachers are holistically integrated with the entire curriculum; provide training and support for other EarthRights staff who teach in the school and external guest teachers as needed to make sure their teaching approach and style aligns with the EarthRights School vision.
  • Manage a centralized collection of curricula, lesson plans and supplemental materials.
  • Organize lesson plans into a streamlined curriculum to ensure accountability and transparency.
  • Plan and implement workflow for students around homework, writing assignments, readings and student presentations; ensure assignments are designed to demonstrate desired learning outcomes.
  • Provide academic and creative writing, and English language support through written and verbal feedback on writing assignments including: essays, research proposals and reports, written campaign tools (such as blogs, fact sheets, press releases, fundraising proposals and other relevant texts). This responsibility is shared with EarthRights School interns and teaching assistants..
  • Ensure curriculum content including featured case studies and examples are up-to-date and relevant each year; this may include liaising with other human rights training in the region.
  • Communicate with EarthRights School Global Manager to share materials from the school and incorporate materials and case studies from other regions as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the Teacher/Facilitator to sequence and design each lesson plan so that it contributes to a cohesive delivery that reflects the curriculum framework.
  • Be accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for counseling and mentoring students in matters related to success, life goals, and personal development.

Student Mentoring and Support

  • Provide needed support related to daily course homework to ensure learning objectives are met.
  • Serve as an advisor for students during their studies and field work, including provision of support related to selecting a research topic, preparing proposals, mentoring during fieldwork, and analysis and writing of their reports or written advocacy tools.
  • Accompany and support students on field trips to visit communities campaigning against earth rights abuses. This responsibility is shared with other staff, interns and fellows.
  • Help students process and reflect critically on their learning experience from field trips.
  • Accompany students to occasional recreational, cultural and educational events in Chiang Mai. This responsibility is shared with other staff, interns and fellows.

Program Administration

  • Participate in organization-wide staff meetings when possible
  • Work closely with the head of the school in preparing program updates, on reporting internally and externally.
  • Support Monitoring Evaluation and Learning initiatives and activities related to the EarthRights School.
  • Support with the EarthRights School recruitment process.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and/or at least 3 years of relevant experience related to teaching, training, mentoring, or capacity-building position with human rights, environmental rights organization preferred.
  • Professional-level English writing skills are mandatory.
  • Proven experiences in lesson planning and high awareness of creative and impactful learning approaches for a diverse student body with adult learners.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the context of Southeast Asia.
  • Demonstrated record of working in the development sector collaboratively with grassroots community movements, organizations, and international NGOs.
  • Background in environment and human rights and/or Southeast Asian community work.
  • Excellent cross-cultural communication skills, including experience working with diverse groups of people, especially students from across Southeast Asia.
  • Strong computer skills, and digital skills especially in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team, both in person and via distance to plan and manage multiple competing tasks simultaneously in order to meet tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated gender sensitivity.
