Description

GPFA-USA is seeking a mission-driven nonprofit leader who believes in the power of women and youth to build peace to serve as the organization’s Executive Director. A successful GPFA-USA Executive Director will embody Leymah Gbowee’s “empower to inspire” philosophy, believe deeply in the importance of access to education and gender equality, and be able to inspire those around them to join this extraordinary effort in service of peace in Liberia and worldwide.

Reporting to and working with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is the lead fundraiser and advocate for GPFA-USA and sets the tone and direction for the organization. This individual is responsible for defining and implementing the GPFA-USA strategy in service of the organizational mission, including diversifying the organization’s funding sources and continuing to build out US-based programs and partnerships. GPFA-USA is transitioning out of its start-up phase and the incoming Executive Director will partner with the Board and staff to grow the organization’s impact and brand.

Key responsibilities

Fundraising and development

  • Expand fundraising activities to support existing grantmaking commitments and new opportunities to grow programs in the USA and Liberia
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with major donors and solicit major gifts
  • Proactively seek opportunities to create innovative gift proposals that inspire donors to make major gifts to GPFA-USA
  • Meet regularly with donors and prospects
  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for major donors and foundations as well as prospects
  • Develop and implement a written strategy and timeline for each donor
  • Plan and carry out special events, including GPFA-USA’s signature event Taste of Liberia

Organizational leadership

  • Develop annual work plans for GPFA-USA, including annual fundraising plan, communications plan and programs plan
  • Seek out and maintain a good understanding of the charitable and capital needs of GPFA in Liberia
  • Manage the organization's finances, including the preparation of the annual budget and regular financial reporting to the board
  • Lead, motivate and mentor GPFA-USA staff, consultants, interns and/or volunteers and ensure a healthy and vibrant workplace culture
  • Work with the Founder and Board of Directors to refine, evolve and implement the organization’s vision and strategy

External relations

  • Actively engage and energize GPFA-USA’s multiple communities including partnering organizations, funders, peer-organizations, the Nobel laureate community, and key feminist and peacebuilding leaders
  • Serve as spokesperson for GPFA-USA, increasing awareness and public education/advocacy
  • Oversee marketing and public relations activities to build Leymah Gbowee and GPFA-USA's visibility and reputation

Qualifications and skills

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant work experience in executive leadership, nonprofit management, and/or development
  • Substantive professional experience in at least one of the following: peace and security, women and girls, education, international development, human rights, social justice
  • Evidence of fundraising and donor success, including a strong understanding of planning and executing a major gifts program and a high level of comfort and effectiveness working with high-net-worth individuals
  • Knowledge and experience in nonprofit financial management and budgeting
  • Exceptional communication and relationship building skills, comfort being the face of GPFA-USA across multiple stakeholder groups
  • Willingness to travel to Liberia at least once a year
  • Exhibits patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy, and tact

Salary is $120,000 and benefits include a monthly health insurance stipend and generous PTO. This is a full-time, exempt position. This role can be performed anywhere within the USA. GPFA-USA has office space available in New York City for use.
