Description

The ABA Fund for Justice and Education (FJE) is a 501(c)(3) charitable fund that supports the public service and educational programs of the American Bar Association. Over 200 ABA public service and educational programs are supported through the FJE each year with generous donor support. These programs provide lawyers with the training and resources needed to help address the legal needs of our communities.

JOB SUMMARY

ABA is seeking a Grant Accountant to support the Finance Division’s oversight of domestic grants, payroll, audits, and other general financial responsibilities. This Grant Accountant will work as part of a team to provide crucial financial support to ABA’s domestic programs of the Professional and Public Services Divisions; ABA entities engaged in activities related to a substantive area of law or other bar or professional interests, and which address broad public law and policy concerns, as well as issues affecting disadvantaged populations to improve access to justice

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reviews accounting transaction for potential charging against grants and ensures compliance with grantor, government or private entities, and appropriate rules, regulations, and/or grant provisions.
  • Reviews expense reports for completeness, accuracy, and allowability and compliance with an assigned grant(s).
  • Reviews all expenses and identifies expenses which are not allowable and provides a recommended course of action to the Manager - Grant Compliance and Control.
  • Prepares and uploads journal entries for monthly cash actuals for program related expenses.
  • Runs pipeline reports and general ledgers on a monthly basis and adds other committed funds and provides program staff with reports on cash burn and remaining funding of specific grants.
  • Prepares government reports (e.g., SF425) and private donor reports either on a standardized reporting schedule or on an ad hoc basis.
  • Maintains the data integrity of all financial transactions for all assigned grants and assists program staff and auditors in identifying and collecting appropriate expense documentation.
  • Collaborates with program staff on expense inquiries, supporting materials, expense allowability, policies, additional awards, and general inquiries.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting.
  • At least two years’ experience reviewing financial transactions against grant provisions to determine allowability of such transactions.
  • At least two years’ experience interpreting and applying grant rules and regulations from government entities (e.g., OMB circulars) and/or private donors.
  • Intermediate-level skill in the Microsoft Office Suite of products.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience interacting with program support staff, donors, and/or grantors;
  • Ability to work as part of a fast-moving team;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Strong written and verbal communication in English required;
  • Strong attention to detail with analytical problem solving skills;
  • Strong understanding of compliance and auditing of expenses.
