Description

GiveDirectly
Vice President, Business Development
Position Location Flexible, Remote Eligible

GiveDirectly aims to reshape international giving – and millions of lives – by providing cash grants directly to the world’s poorest. The Brookings Institution estimates that $70 billion of cash transfers would be required to eliminate the poverty gap; the aid sector currently spends $135 billion each year, much of it on evidence-free interventions. GiveDirectly wants to change that, establishing cash transfers as the benchmark for foreign aid – as the index fund is a benchmark for the financial industry – and in the process accelerating the end of extreme poverty.

GiveDirectly has raised over $750 million since launching in 2011, delivered cash to more than 1,000,000 people, and launched offices in 7 countries and operations across 9 countries. GiveDirectly has also supported large-scale, experimental research that indicates strong recipient impact of its programs. As a result, GiveDirectly has been celebrated as one of the most innovative non-profit companies by Fast Company, while the growing cash transfer movement (and GiveDirectly’s leading role within it) have been featured in The New York Times Magazine, This American Life, Foreign Affairs, and The Economist. At the core of GiveDirectly’s model is respect for recipient choice – and the belief that recipients should have the dignity and freedom to choose for themselves what they need.

Cash transfers are at a potential inflection point: COVID-19 has amplified the challenges of bulkier in-kind aid models, and governments are deploying cash as their most common tool of assistance to vulnerable populations. GiveDirectly has an opportunity to leverage its strong track record, to both deliver immense impact and position itself as the premiere cash implementation vehicle globally.

GiveDirectly seeks an analytical and entrepreneurial leader to serve in the newly created role of Vice President of Business Development (Vice President). The Vice President is responsible for scaling the corresponding Partnerships team and impact thereof, driving commitments from bilateral, multilateral, and foundation funders. The Vice President will define the roadmap and vision for maximizing the cash GiveDirectly raises to deliver to recipients, including establishing new partner relationships for the organization and strengthening existing ones. The Vice President will oversee and scale a fast-growing pipeline already reaching more than $50 million in annual revenue, and manage a growing team of 6, as well as inform the development and growth of 10 Country Directors and thematic specialists (Humanitarian, Innovation) who invest 50% of their time in partnerships.

In FY2020, GiveDirectly raised $315 million, including $114.5 million via bilateral, multilateral, and foundation partnerships.

The GiveDirectly team is dedicated to shifting the status quo with respect to how and by whom decisions are made in the aid space. GiveDirectly believes that elevating recipient choice is critical, as is demonstrably committing to transparency around metrics and evidence. The organization is looking for applicants who are deeply aligned with these objectives, and energized by the prospect of partnering with organizations that advance them.

The ideal candidate will have the following personal and professional skills, qualities, and competencies:

  • Passionate about shifting the status quo in the aid space and ensuring that people living in poverty have the dignity to choose for themselves how best to improve their lives. Able to authentically engage and inspire others as a senior representative of GiveDirectly.
  • Eight or more years of experience in a similar role or function, including but not limited to the following: partnership development, institutional relations, foundation relations, business development, and sales.
  • Proven leadership ability and management experience in building high-performing teams: track record of recruiting, coaching, mentoring, motivating, and ensuring ongoing professional development of staff; fostering a cohesive team and an environment of trust, collaboration, and transparency; increasing effectiveness and accountability through established objectives, performance standards, and guidance.
  • Experience developing and executing strategic fundraising plans to achieve goals and objectives. Demonstrated experience cultivating, training, and working collaboratively with senior-level colleagues and board members. Strong preference for candidates with a track record of raising funds from major institutions (e.g., USAID, FCDO, EU, World Bank).
  • Particular strength in international fundraising and ability to work adeptly across cultures and contexts; knowledge of strategies and trends in global philanthropy.
  • Demonstrated analytical and iterative mindset, with strong framework for prioritization, as well as putting structure and process to ambiguous problems.
  • A forward thinker with a track record of utilizing new methods of engagement and connectivity vis-à-vis potential funders, and who will be driven by innovation in developing best practices in the current and post-COVID-19 world.
  • Availability to travel nationally and internationally, consistent with public health guidelines.

The position location is flexible and remote eligible, with a slight preference for candidates who would be based in one of the following locations: Washington, DC, USA; New York City, USA; London, England; Kampala, Uganda; Kigali, Rwanda; Lilongwe, Malawi; Monrovia, Liberia; Nairobi, Kenya; Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo; Maputo, Mozambique; Rabat, Morocco.

In addition to the specific skills required for the role, GiveDirectly seeks candidates who are aligned with the organization’s values, and who demonstrate core competencies in emotional intelligence, problem solving, project management, follow-through, and fostering inclusivity.

GiveDirectly is committed to observing all local, national and international laws that protect children, vulnerable adults, and basic human rights of all. GiveDirectly is committed to a policy of “zero tolerance for sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (SEAH)” and expects anyone who works for the organization to uphold the protection and safeguarding of our recipients as a priority.
