Description

Responsible for growing FH’s portfolio in {Africa or LAC/Asia} by analyzing, planning, researching, and development of organization's objectives and strategic plans in order to achieve business opportunities, growth, and financial profitability. Will engage institutional donors with a specific focus on new business development opportunities with the US Government (USG). In partnership with the Business Development (BD) Lead (Sector) and geographical BD Managers, will develop and execute a business development strategy for the regional portfolio they oversee, lead in identifying opportunities that align to FH’s Heartbeat and prepare a winning plan for the preparation of large proposals. Will research and prepare trends analyses of donor funding, while also influencing the funding strategies of key donors to align with FH regional programming priorities, and will support the development of new grant opportunities.

Principal Responsibilities
External Engagement Strategy:
● Network and build relationships with key decision makers within the US Government (USG) branches and potential partner organizations.
● Engage in public policy discussions related to FH’s regional programmatic areas to inform and shape policy decisions of the USG.
● Inform, influence, and shape USG programmatic solicitations (RFAs, RFPs, etc.) in Washington, DC and USAID missions, using FH’s best practices, lessons learned, etc.
● In collaboration with FH’s Programs Team and country office technical staff, raise FH’s profile by representing FH in national, regional, and global advocacy and policy fora (e.g., InterAction, etc.), and through presentations at major conferences, publishing papers, and networking.
● Present FH’s research, raising FH’s profile as a pioneer in innovative research/programming with think tanks, relevant research bodies, universities and the USG (e.g. USAID/BHA; Global Health Bureau; USDA; Feed the Future, etc.).
● Increase organizational engagement and profile at relevant meetings, events, and within resource mobilization or where donor-specific peer networks are established.
● Facilitate the development of strategic partnerships and negotiations with other organizations and donors.
● Build a network of professional business contacts within development and relief sectors.
● Create opportunities for organizational engagement with donors, partners and peers in country and in DC to strengthen the FH brand, promote FH as a thought leader in both sector-specific and broader development approaches and improve donor perception.
● Strategize content for social media, websites and publications in order to position FH to influence and lead in the industry.
Management of Business Development Team
● Lead and manage the BD Africa or LAC/Asia Team with a focus on ensuring quality, strategy development, direction-setting, prioritization, and positioning of FH as a leader in programming in FH program countries.
● Ensure strong coordination and collaboration with the Sectoral BD teams, International Operations (including country offices), and the Proposal Development (PD) Team.
● Participate in the development of BD systems and processes and ensure that they are implemented effectively within the BD Africa or LAC/Asia Team.
● Oversee and ensure the effective handover of opportunities from the BD Africa or LAC/Asia Team to the PD team and stay engaged to ensure winning from the perspective of donor intelligence.
New Business Acquisition:
● Search for and cultivate new business opportunities in order to pre-position FH.
● Write, prepare, edit, proofread and review proposals for submission.
● Develop and execute business development portfolio strategy.
● Provide strategic guidance for proposal direction and design based on BD intelligence gathering.
● Monitor and share information about new opportunities, donor-funding trends, and relevant funding information from external sources of news.
● Provide business intelligence about donor direction ahead of the release of opportunities.
● Understand priority countries sectoral strengths and programmatic models, and research/monitor the market for key potential opportunities.
● In collaboration with the PD Team and International Operations, identify and develop portfolio propositions and differentiators to create strategy that will make FH a partner of choice.
● Gather technical input and competitive intelligence from country offices, technical units, subject matter specialists, and other resource persons.
● Develop comprehensive pre-positioning for proposals.
● Research and prospect for new opportunities to ensure a robust pipeline of engagement within the market.
● Plan and prepare materials to highlight and raise FH’s profile.
● Contribute to strategic initiatives and thought leadership of the organization by participating in relevant working groups, and representing FH externally.
Portfolio Revenue Generation:
● Identify and assess new business opportunities toward portfolio revenue goals.
● Monitor, analyze and forecast new business development opportunities raising targets/progress against targets.
● Prepare analytical and performance reports to show the effectiveness of the proposals being pursued.
● Ensure the efficient and effective administration of data and information relating to business development portfolio.
● Identify potential risks and mitigation strategies for potential business opportunities.
Donor Management:
● Manage donor relationships to ensure ongoing engagement that will benefit FH.
● Arrange and participate in internal and external donor debriefs.
● Support BIA to maintain accurate information about business development opportunities in internal databases and assist with analysis of proposal development data.
● Ensure that relevant information is accessible to and circulated to other portfolio members.
Other:
● Create and promote innovative ideas for FH programs and business development, and successfully market them to donors.
● Participate in strategy reviews, strategy development and operationalization thereof.
● Other duties as assigned.

Job Level Specifications
● Vibrant personal relationship with Jesus Christ, a Christian commitment to serving the poor and in full agreement with FH’s Christian beliefs expressed in The Heartbeat.
● Demonstrated computer-operating skills, including proficiency in Google platforms, Microsoft Office products, and virtual technologies such as Skype and/or Zoom.
● Ability to sit/stand at a computer for up to 8 hours a day doing repetitive motions on a keyboard.
● Ability to write compelling proposals in English.
● Bilingual in Spanish and English is required for the position working with our LAC region.
● Ability to travel up to 30% of time per year in the US and internationally, to insecure countries or locations.

Experience
● At least 10 years of experience in business development, institutional funding acquisition, and programmatic experience.
● At least 3 years of experience working in a regional or country office outside the United States.

Education/Certifications
● Master’s degree required preferably in the health, agriculture, agribusiness, livelihoods, international development, or similar fields.

Distinguishing Competencies
● Existing relationships with USG and multilateral grant donors.
● Success in growing business development portfolios in Africa or LAC/Asia.
● Expertise in international development.

● Exceptional communication and representational skills, including oral, written, and public speaking.

Language
Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preference for French and/or Spanish language skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from donors, groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Supervisor Responsibilities
Directly supervises staff. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints, resolving problems, etc.

Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to midpoint of the range, based on relevant experience, internal equity and budgetary allowances.
