Title: Chief Development Officer
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer
Location: 305 7th Avenue NY, NY
Hours: 35 Hours, Exempt
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with the CEO, and in collaboration with the Board’s development committee, to develop and implement the organization’s development strategy, to include leveraging public sector dollars in concert with fundraising from foundations, corporations, major donors, special events, direct-mail, cause-marketing and capital campaigns.
- Partner with the CEO and Board to advance fundraising goals. Work closely with Board Members to inspire greater participation and engagement in development efforts, leveraging the resources, talents, and networks that Board members bring to the table.
- Work with agency leadership, particularly program leadership, to identify and tailor fundraising strategies to ensure that current and future program needs are effectively anticipated and met.
- Develop a strong partnership with the Chief of Staff in support of the CEO’s engagement in the fundraising program and on issues related to board development and engagement.
- Support a culture of integration across all departments and the development of systems that enhance agency operations, with a particular focus on alignment between the Development and Finance divisions.
- Ensure that communications are aligned with strategic plan and fundraising goals to build greater visibility for Good Shepherd Services through storytelling, digital communications, social media, and other cultivation tools. Raise Good Shepherd’s profile and strengthen its reputation among donors, government officials, constituents, volunteers, partners, other key stake-holders, and the general public.
- Make donor stewardship a priority. Set the overarching direction, establish metrics, and lead the staff in donor cultivation and solicitation efforts, exercising diplomatic persistence and demonstrating the ability to close the deal. Evaluate and refine processes to support continued improvement and fundraising success, using data to drive decisions and make timely course corrections when needed.
- Monitor fundraising trends and key changes in the external environment; communicate their implications to the CEO and Board with suggested action steps.
- Supervise director of grants, director of external relations and database resource manager and their teams in effectively supporting the above work.
- Responsible for ensuring all teams, leaders and work are in alignment with the mission, vision, values and approach of the agencyand embodies the agency’s core leadership competencies
- Effectively and compassionately communicates with all levels of staff, internal and external stakeholders about policies, challenges, programmatic concerns and needs.
Requirements
The Chief Development Officer should thoroughly embrace and be able to represent effectively Good Shepherd Services’ mission, vision, values and approach (a strength-based, trauma-informed, youth, family and community development approach with a commitment to anti-racism and equity) and have the following experience and qualifications:
- Successful leadership record achieving fundraising goals in a senior or executive role in a nonprofit organization. A working knowledge of the New York City funding community, its leaders and trends.
- An exemplary reputation with stature and credibility.
- Proven ability for bringing together different departments within an organization to work together toward a shared vision and goals. A strategic thinker with a relentless focus on improving systems and coordinating efforts.
- Experience as a frontline fundraiser with demonstrated success in personally cultivating, soliciting, and securing major and lead gifts; and developing and sustaining strong relationships with the Board of Directors, program leadership, colleagues and other partners and stakeholders.
- An ability to secure financial support from diverse sources – including major donors, foundations, and corporations. Demonstrated ability to leverage government support. Success designing and managing comprehensive campaigns to secure both operating and capital funding.
- The ability to interact professionally with Board members and colleagues who have diverse professional skills and perspectives. An ability to manage and implement change, and motivate and mentor staff while increasing performance. Experience leading, facilitating, and managing fundraising with a Board in transition.
- Flexibility and the demonstrated ability to think creatively and thrive in a fast-paced, complex social service environment, juggling numerous projects and satisfying numerous constituencies simultaneously.
- An individual whose sense of humor and maturity allows them to seek and welcome feedback, maintain perspective and a promote a sense of balance.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Facility and comfort with technology.
- Has high EQ (emotional intelligence); can self-regulate, is self-aware and perceptive to social and team dynamics.
- Develops a climate and team culture where psychological, social and emotional safety is valued and prioritized.
- Demonstrates a commitment to cultural humility - a commitment to learning about themselves, their identities and cultural experiences, as well as those of their staff, the participants and the communities they partner with.
- Master’s degree preferred in a related field or the equivalent of 15 years of experience with 5 years of senior or executive level experience.
