ROLE SUMMARY
The Chief of Staff (CoS) will provide leadership and oversight for day-to-day functions, as well as strategic support to the CEO and senior leadership to drive forward the mission and strategy of a global organization. A leader in their own right with deep knowledge of our industry, the CoS will be a strategic advisor, gatekeeper, problem solver, and thought partner to the CEO. They will support the senior leadership team, and manage a front office team to ensure that strategic and cultural initiatives are implemented, while simultaneously driving short-term operational results in an evolving organization and industry.
This team player will help develop and execute change strategies to meet innovative organizational goals and strengthen JSI’s external presence. The CoS executes strategic priorities and introduces operational discipline into a transforming organization with a focus on making communication and decision processes more effective. This role has both internal-facing and external-facing responsibilities and will support the CEO and management team in prioritizing and executing internal system modernization, budgeting, communications, and technology systems.
The CoS is expected to work with the leadership team to enable a people-centered and equitable organization that can navigate trends in the international development sector and inspire a workforce in turbulent times. They must be a skillful collaborator who effortlessly interacts with all levels of an organization, adeptly building productive relationships and achieving actionable results.
RESPONSIBILITIES
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Support
- Collaborate with the President and CEO to develop and implement organizational strategies.
- Conduct research and analysis to weigh in on decisions and support problem-solving.
Operational Management
- Oversee the day-to-day operations a front office: mentor and manage staff in internal communications, external positioning, and project management.
- Establish, benchmark and evaluate key performance indicators to drive decisions that advance the organization.
Communication and Liaison
- Serve as a point of contact between the CEO and identified internal/external stakeholders in collaboration with the Senior Director of Communications.
- Structure and facilitate internal communication flow within the organization, ensuring key messages are conveyed effectively.
Project Management
- Lead and coordinate special projects and initiatives on behalf of the C-Suite.
- Ensure timely completion of projects and monitor progress.
Team Leadership
- Manage and lead the front office team providing guidance, mentorship, and support.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.
Decision Support
- Provide analysis and recommendations to assist the leadership team to make informed decisions.
- Anticipate challenges and proactively address issues.
Policy and Process Development
- Develop and implement policies and processes to enhance organizational efficiency.
- Identify areas for improvement and innovation.
Crisis Management
- Act as a point person during crises, coordinating responses and communication.
- Ensure the organization is prepared to handle unforeseen challenges.
QUALIFICATIONS
Leadership Skills
- A sophisticated mix of emotional intelligence, judgment, discretion, diplomacy, and political acumen, to interact with powerful direct reports and board members. Acumen and finesse to handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously mixing long-term projects with the urgency of immediate demands. Ability to observe strict confidentiality in all aspects of the job. Ability to manage sensitive information during change management processes.
- Solutions-oriented problem-solver with the ability to anticipate problems, analyze, and synthesize information to guide decision-making. Comfortable with data-driven decision-making and benchmarking against metrics.
- Initiative, professionalism, and flexibility within an environment of frequent interruptions, changing or conflicting priorities, and varying workloads. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and operate with a high sense of urgency.

Education and Experience
- A Master’s degree in business or related field. A combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in senior management, operations, project management, and/or executive support.
- 5+ years of recent INGO experience with a deep understanding of the international development sector and its trends.
- Knowledge of financial management, strategic planning, and well-developed project management skills.
- Experience applying and utilizing software and technology to develop creative solutions to effectively solve problems and advance the C-Suite agenda.
- Experience collaborating with senior-level executives within a matrixed organization.
- Understanding of the NGO sector with direct experience managing administration and operations in a multilingual, multicultural, global non-profit organization required.
- Commitment to advancing health and racial equity through internal organizational practices and external work.
- A willingness to travel as required.
- Intellectual curiosity about JSI and the communities served.
Salary commensurate with experience.
