Brief Job Overview

USP seeks a new Senior Business Development Specialist to serve as a key member of our Global and Federal Practice (GFP) Global Business Development (GBD) team. This staff member will work across multiple teams in the U.S. and globally to support the achievement of annual new business GFP targets. The role will provide managerial support across the full business development lifecycle, with a focus on leading intelligence gathering by identifying, tracking, and summarizing key public funding trends, donor strategies, and potential future opportunities; developing materials for decision-making such as donor briefs and scorecards; managing proposal development process, and overseeing contributions from a diverse set of proposal team members. The Senior Business Development Specialist will also lead certain efforts to continuously improve the business development processes, tools and resources. The ideal candidate is one who likes a fast-paced environment, teamwork and collaboration while managing diverse responsibilities.

The Senior Business Development Specialist has the following responsibilities:

Research and Analysis for Business Intelligence (30%)

  • Research, monitor, track, analyze, and disseminate internally new opportunities from U.S. Government funding agencies, such as USAID, CDC, FDA, and NIH, other bilateral funding agencies, multilateral organizations, foundations and/or other funding agencies.
  • Conduct in-depth landscape research and analysis to develop and/or contribute to donor briefs, program summaries, and other business strategy documents to support internal decision-making.
  • Works closely with GBD leadership and other division/department leadership to develop and implement capture strategies and participates in scoping trips to the country/region as part of the pre-positioning/capture process.
  • Contribute to and maintain a tracking system for new opportunities that enables coordination and progress reporting for Business Development and Leadership teams in the US, Africa, and Asia.

Proposal Development (60%)

  • Leads multiple proposal teams throughout the year to design detailed proposals that are persuasive, competitive, and compliant.
  • Manages proposal development process and submissions, contributing to or facilitating key proposal decisions, supporting recruitment, and partnering, drafting proposal sections and annexes, as assigned, troubleshooting issues as needed, and completing a final compliance check prior to submission.
  • Provides ad hoc research, and in coordination with technical and other proposal team leads as required.
  • Mentors junior staff on business development processes and provides guidance and support in uploading USP business development standards and managing compliant and responsive proposals.

GBD business development tools and processes (10%)

  • Manage, identify, and lead/contribute to process improvements to tools and processes for proposal management, from capture to submission, including managing a platform to track the new business pipeline, Go/No-Go process, and proposal preparation and submission (calendars, annotated proposal templates, deliverable tracking tool, etc.)
  • Write and update past performance references/project descriptions, organizational capability statements, and boilerplate language related to core, technical USP GPH competencies in conjunction with applicable technical and program teams.
  • Contribute to a diverse, inclusive, and results-oriented, and supportive team atmosphere.

Who is USP Looking For?

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of our mission, commitment to excellence through inclusive and equitable behaviors and practices, ability to quickly build credibility with stakeholders, along with the following competencies and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field with minimum of five years of relevant professional experience with at least three years of experience in new business development, including proposal writing or report sections.
  • Excellent research, analysis, writing, and editing.
  • Excellent written and oral communication with ability to communicate clearly and concisely, tailoring communication style to effectively communicate with diverse audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective in interacting across teams, diverse stakeholder groups, and country contexts both in person and virtually.
  • Superb organizational, tracking, and follow-up abilities, including working collaboratively under time pressures with calm, steadfast leadership.
  • Self-starter with strong writing and time management skills, including attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, take initiative and accomplish work in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Desired Preferences

  • Master’s degree in public health or related field, or exposure to these areas trough work experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of global public health and donor-funded programming, including pharmaceutical management.
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, integrity, and flexibility.
  • Ability to work effectively independently as well as within a team setting.
  • Proficiency in second language preferred.
  • Willingness to travel and work internationally at times on short notice.
