MFAN is a diverse coalition composed of international development practitioners, development institutions, think tanks, and the private sector that advocates for more effective U.S. foreign assistance. MFAN was created to build upon the bipartisan consensus that the U.S. should play a global leadership role in achieving economic growth, reducing poverty and promoting locally-led development, and that the U.S. can play that role more effectively, efficiently, and transparently. The MFAN Senior Director will support the coalition’s Co-Chairs and committees to drive MFAN’s advocacy agenda with Congress and the Administration as well as lead the coalition’s communications. With a strong understanding of both the policy and political landscapes in Washington, this position will help develop a pro-active agenda that advances MFAN’s policy priorities through legislation, engagement with Congress, the Administration, and the media, as well as other activities to elevate development in U.S. foreign policy.
Responsibilities and Tasks
- Provide strategic vision, communications, and government relations expertise and leadership to MFAN;
- Under guidance from the MFAN Steering Committee and Co-chairs, define, lead, and help implement MFAN’s policy agenda with outreach to Capitol Hill, the Administration and the MFAN network;
- In consultation with the MFAN co-chairs and MFAN’s Working Group(s), develop and distribute public statements, social media content and letters;
- Facilitate regular collaboration with Network partners on MFAN’s policy and program goals;
- Organize MFAN events and roundtables with U.S. government officials and external stakeholders;
- Coordinate with the Network members on related policy research and analysis;
- Track and provide read-outs on relevant Congressional hearings, legislation, and other events and forums;
- Carry out other coalition tasks including writing memos, organizing internal meetings and consultations, tracking MFAN’s budget, and managing potential interns or staff.
Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred;
- Minimum of 5-7 years of dedicated government relations background;
- Relevant policy, legislative, communication, and advocacy experience in a Congressional office, non-profit organization, campaign, trade association or coalition, or similar environment required;
- Knowledge of international development with a specific understanding of U.S. foreign assistance programs and policy;
- Expertise in developing press materials and social media content;
- Strong understanding of Washington-based advocacy platforms and networks;
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; demonstrated experience or skills in formal communications efforts;
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work under pressure;
- Exceptional work ethic, ability to work independently, and “can do” spirit.
