Description

The Associate Director (AD), Global Business Development will be a key driver in shaping the future growth and success of JSI. Working cross-functionally, the AD is expected to contribute to increasing visibility and reflecting JSI’s areas of expertise and experience within the international development sector. The Associate Director is responsible to contribute to and execute strategic business development plans, enhance operational efficiency, and foster collaboration across the International Division, JSI, and donors/stakeholders to efficiently drive organizational growth for an assigned portfolio in line with strategic objectives. This position reports to the Director, Global Business Development with in the Business Development Department. The preference is for this position to be based in Boston or Washington DC with a hybrid schedule. We may also consider a fully remote position in states where JSI R&T is registered (AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IL, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, NH, NJ, NM, NY, NC, PA, RI, TN, TX, VT, VA, WA, WI).

Specifically, the Associate Director, Global BD provides leadership and cohesion to JSI’s non-USG business development efforts. This position works closely with JSI’s country, technical and program teams to proactively position for and respond to strategic non-USG donor opportunities. This includes developing donor-specific strategies and plans, development of a “concept bank” of ideas ready to pitch to appropriate funders, and ensuring coordination and collaboration between global and country-based staff on strategy and prioritization of new opportunities. This position will oversee a lean, dedicated team of BD staff focused on maximizing JSI’s visibility, positioning, and responsiveness to a selected set of existing funders and also working closely with the Partnerships and Technical teams to identify and cultivate new funder relationships.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Director to execute annual business development strategies, workplan, and targets that align with JSI’s organizational plans and country level efforts and growth, as assigned; including monitoring the competitive landscape and provide input into strategic positioning for the organization.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships and strengthen relationships with current and potential donors, international, regional and local NGOs and private sector organizations to increase impact and sustainability of our work, as assigned.
  • Lead efforts to develop, adapt and continuously innovate on approaches to BD processes, collaborating across the organization.
  • Play a variety of roles in the design, drafting, and submission of proposals and concept notes to non-USG donors and/or oversee, coach and mentor staff to serve in those roles
  • Ensure technical design and strategic visioning approaches are in line with best practice and reflect evidence-based, innovative approaches and applied by global staff, as needed.
  • Develop and implement relevant BD training plans, including delivering and training the trainers to deliver BD orientations, trainings, and continuing education for BD and global staff, as needed.
  • Ensure sound BD practices and routine use of BD tools, processes, and systems through knowledge sharing, training and mentoring, as required.
  • Ensure the availability and use of quality data to inform decision-making processes, emphasizing data visualization and KPI tracking
  • Lead and manage assigned BD staff in full accordance within JSI policies.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary to increase team capacity and maintain performance working with the team and Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in public health, international development, business administration, or other related field. Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of experience may be considered in lieu of advanced degree.
  • 7+ years’ experience working for an international development organization, with experience in new business development.
  • 6+ years’ experience progressively participating in new business development, with a minimum of 3 years successfully leading non-USG proposals
  • Demonstrated knowledge of international development, current trends and priorities, particularly in the field of health.
  • Experience working with top global health funders, such as Gavi, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, including knowledge of their programmatic priorities, business practices, rules and regulations.
  • Experience working with nonprofit/mission-based organizations in global public health, and for organizations with global reach.
  • Experience delivering results in a highly decentralized, matrixed professional environment.
  • Commitment to advancing health and racial equity through internal organizational practices and external work.
  • Strategic and analytical thinking, superior problem-solving skills, and ability to execute near-term details with precision while advancing a broader, forward-looking strategy.
  • Strong performance accountability and ability to follow through on commitments, maintain confidentiality, and meet deadlines in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong leadership and proven ability to recruit, direct, train, and manage a team of personnel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to distill and translate complex concepts across diverse audiences. Fluency in English required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products especially Word and PowerPoint; experience with Google Suite, Microsoft Teams and 365, Salesforce, and Adobe.
  • Proficiency in other languages such as Spanish or French is a plus.
  • Willingness and ability to travel international, as requested.
