Senior Director, Employee Engagement and Belonging, DEI (Washington, DC, Chicago, IL, Durham, NC, or San Francisco, CA)
A mission-driven professional with a passion for creating a workplace culture and experience that is energized, engaged, empathetic, and equitable, where everyone feels like they truly belong.
This new position at Arabella is an exciting opportunity for someone to shape both employee engagement and internal diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work at Arabella and within the social sector. Reporting to the Head of DEI, this position will develop, implement, and oversee strategies to continuously improve employee engagement, and support ongoing diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging across Arabella. This position’s overall responsibilities will be to focus inward on Arabella’s most important asset, our people. Partnering with the Head of DEI, Head of Culture and Talent, and senior leaders across the firm, the Senior Director of Employee Engagement and Belonging will liaise between staff, team leads, and executive leadership to align all Arabellans, continue to support the ongoing work of building strong relationships, and drive a people first culture where every Arabellan can thrive.
The person who fills this role should be deeply committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, with a clear sense of their areas of deep knowledge and areas of growth. This role will require someone who has a deep commitment to both individual and collective employee satisfaction, be well versed in creating and delivering diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging related trainings, is a masterful facilitator, coach, communicator, and truth-teller. They should be excited about the complexity and ambiguity that comes from juggling multiple projects, walking alongside people in their lived experience at Arabella, and working across teams, projects, and personalities on a regular basis. Ultimately, this person must have a passion for supporting Arabella’s dynamic culture, building inclusive communities, and modeling how to live into Arabella’s values of being bold, finding a way, creating together, and doing good better.
Essential Responsibilities:
Employee Engagement (40-50%)
  • Design, implement and oversee best in class employee engagement strategy and tactics that support Arabella’s organizational goals and priorities including retention efforts as well as diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work firm-wide
  • Create, define, and implement a vision for all formal and informal internal working groups to ensure they support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, feedback, and employee engagement that is aligned with overall organizational priorities
  • Create and manage a feedback infrastructure (process, tools, and forums) that measures and communicates employee satisfaction, engagement, morale, and overall experience to all relevant stakeholders
  • Engage all levels of Arabella employees to serve as a trusted advisor and liaison who has a clear understanding of the needs and tensions of multiple internal stakeholder groups
  • Liaise between DEI department, Culture and Talent department, and lines of business to ensure that employee engagement is being appropriately measured and communicated, with the express responsibility of supporting the organization in being accountable to obtaining employee engagement goals by making real-time adjustments as needed
  • Manage projects, including working with and delegating to both junior and senior staff in a matrixed organizational structure
  • Implement the core activities of employee engagement and belonging workstreams which will include conducting research and interviews, collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, creating hypotheses to be tested, facilitating learning and collaboration among diverse stakeholders, and developing high-quality reports and presentations
  • Model how to embody a workplace culture that is inclusive, empathetic and produces equitable outcomes by valuing everyone’s voice, delegating effectively to project team members, and providing support and training to help team members develop their skills and talent
  • Contribute meaningfully to internal communications efforts where all-staff or broad stakeholder groups are the audience(s) by providing or advising on content that is inclusive, relevant, and supports the employee engagement strategy
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging and Capacity Building (30 – 40%)
  • Partner with the Head of DEI to design and deliver trainings, facilitate discussions, and provide individual coaching and internal and external resources that will lead to a more inclusive and equitable internal culture where everyone feels they belong
  • Create real-time tools and resources that support the organization and employees in embedding and operationalizing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging best practices into everything that we do.
  • Participate in and support Arabella’s other teams on DEI capacity building as needed
  • Support existing internal diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and culture groups including identity-based caucuses, ILA’s, heritage month committee, culture committees, and others
Other Projects as Assigned (10%)
  • Engage in continuous professional development to stay on top of the ever-evolving employee engagement and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging field to ensure learnings are coming back into the organization
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and management of key components of the team’s or firm’s strategic plan, annual objectives, and key business performance metrics
  • Contribute to professional growth and satisfaction of junior staff by providing appropriate direction, support, guidance, and mentorship
  • Develop and share relevant skills and issue-area expertise
To Be Successful in This Role, You’ll Need:
  • Strong passion for doing deep work to ensure each and every person is heard, feels connected to their work and colleagues, and has trust in and for the organization.
  • Strong existing commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging as evidenced by significant (in time spent, seniority of role, etc.) volunteer or professional work in this area
  • Familiarity and alignment with the principles espoused in Arabella’s DEI statement
  • At least 4 – 5 years of experience training and facilitating on racial equity, DEI/DEI-related, belonging topics with a diverse set of audiences in identity and level of expertise
  • Proven ability to work inclusively with diverse teams, audiences, and stakeholders to achieve shared goals, including excellent teamwork, relationship building, customer service, and strong facilitation skills
  • At least 4– 5 years of experience working in or consulting to business, philanthropy, public policy, nonprofit management, and a commitment to social impact
  • Strong project management skills to drive projects to completion, including the ability to lead complex projects, establish and manage workplans, oversee and delegate to team members, and meet deadlines
  • Strong organizational and research skills and an understanding of how to gather, analyze, and synthesize diverse information from written documents and interviews
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and ability to build positive relationships with multiple stakeholder groups and identities
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • The ability to provide excellent service, including being able to address complex personal and interpersonal matters, implement and communicate structural and procedural changes to everyone involved, and to coach teammates on how to apply and implement change
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team

Total Rewards (compensation and benefits)
This is a full-time position. We offer a competitive and holistic total rewards package that includes salary, bonus, and benefits. Our base salaries are based on a blend of similar sized organizations from different sectors, including nonprofits, foundations, and professional service firms. They are also based on local market rates and differentiated by geography.
All full-time staff are eligible for our generous benefits package on their first day of employment:

Working with Us
While this position must be based in Washington, DC, Chicago, IL, Durham, NC or San Francisco, CA, please note that all Arabella Advisors’ offices have reopened, and we work in a hybrid environment.
We reopened our offices in Summer of 2022 and work with a hybrid workplace strategy to ensure continued flexibility for our staff, while deepening our strong culture rooted in collaboration and in-person interactions between colleagues. We expect that after their initial onboarding, all Arabellans will have the choice of two hybrid schedules. Our hybrid schedule options include Flex-based, with 1-2 days per week in the office, or Office-based, with 3+ days per week in the office (or more if preferred) and the remaining days working at home/remotely. We will make reasonable accommodations under the guidelines of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
